Admissions Testing

IQ and achievement testing for students in Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland

Children in School Bus

I offer cognitive ability (IQ) and academic achievement testing. These tests are often required for applications to private schools and gifted programs.

Reasons to Consider Testing:

  • Private School Applications: Many private schools require IQ and/or academic achievement testing as part of their admissions process.

  • Gifted and Talented Programs: IQ testing is often essential for admission to gifted and talented programs, such as the Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) in Fairfax County.

  • Understand Your Child's Abilities: IQ and academic achievement tests provide valuable insights into your child's unique learning profile, empowering you to make informed decisions about their education.

IQ Testing

I administer the Wechsler Intelligence Scales, the most widely used IQ tests for children and adults. The specific test used depends on your child's age:

  • Age 5: Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV)

  • Age 6 to 15: Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V)

  • Age 16 and older: Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fifth Edition (WAIS-5)

Academic Achievement Testing

If academic achievement testing is also needed, we will work together to determine which test would be best. I offer both the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test – Fourth Edition (WIAT-4) and the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement – Third Edition (KTEA-3). These tests provide important information about your child’s reading, writing, and math skills.

The Process

1.  Testing session

If your child is taking an IQ test, we will schedule 1.5 to 2 hours of testing in the morning. If your child is taking an IQ test and an academic achievement test, we will schedule 4 hours of testing.

2.  Written report

Just a few days after your child's testing session, you will receive a written report with your child’s results. This report will include all of the information you need for your child’s application.

3.  Feedback

We will meet in person or online to talk about your child's test results.

Do you take insurance?

I do not participate with any insurance plans. Most insurance providers do not cover admissions evaluations, as they are considered educational rather than medical.

What if my child is nervous about testing?

I understand that testing can be a new and sometimes intimidating experience for children. At the same time, it's important for them to feel at ease so the results accurately reflect their true abilities. I have over 15 years of experience giving IQ and academic achievement tests to children. I will work one-on-one with your child and make the session as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. While initial nerves are common, most of the children I work with enjoy the testing process and even ask to come back.

Should my child study for the testing session?

No. These tests were designed to be taken without any preparation.
