I offer cognitive ability (IQ) and academic achievement testing that can be used as part of the application process for private schools and gifted programs.
Your child might need IQ and academic achievement testing if:
-
Your child is applying to a private school.
-
You are referring your child for a gifted and talented program, such as the Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) in Fairfax County.
-
You suspect your child is gifted, and you want to understand their unique intellectual abilities so you can make informed decisions about their education.
IQ and academic achievement tests provide valuable information about how your child learns, giving you the knowledge you need to support their educational journey.
Which test will my child take?
I administer the Wechsler intelligence tests, which are the most widely used IQ tests. Depending on your child's age, I will administer one of the following tests:
-
Age 5: Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV)
-
Age 6 to 15: Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V)
-
Age 16 and older: Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fifth Edition (WAIS-5)
If your child also needs an academic achievement test, we will work together to decide which test would be best. I offer both the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test – Fourth Edition (WIAT-4) and the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement – Third Edition (KTEA-3). These tests provide important information about your child’s reading, writing, and math skills.
The Process
1. Testing session
If your child is taking an IQ test, we will schedule 1.5 to 2 hours of testing in the morning. If your child is taking an IQ test and an academic achievement test, we will schedule 4 hours of testing.
2. Written report
Just a few days after your child's testing session, you will receive a written report with your child’s results. This report will include all of the information you need for your child’s application.
3. Feedback
We will meet in person or online to talk about your child's test results.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does testing cost?
IQ-test (age 5): $550.
IQ-test (age 6 and up): $700.
IQ and academic achievement testing: $1,500.
Each fee covers everything involved in the evaluation, including the testing session, written report, and feedback session.
Do you take insurance?
I do not participate with any insurance plans. Most insurance plans do not cover admissions evaluations because they are considered educational, rather than medical.
What if my child is anxious about testing?
I understand that many children are anxious about taking tests. For young children, this evaluation could even be their first time taking a test. At the same time, it is important for children to feel comfortable so that the test results reflect their true abilities. I will work one-on-one with your child and make the testing session as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. I have over 15 years of experience administering these tests to children. Although many children are nervous about the idea of taking the test, most of the children I work with enjoy the testing process and even ask to come back.
Should my child study for the testing session?
No, your child does not need to study. These tests were designed to be taken without any preparation.
